6 Tips To Help Your Move & How We Survived Our Cross Country Move

As a parent, whether you have young kids or older kids, it can be exhausting attempting to organize your life. Your kids are running around, you have toys overflowing in every room and you just can never find those two socks to match no matter how hard you try. The number one important thing you can do is get yourself organized to make it easier on yourself. Once you get your life organized before your move, you can easily set you and your family up for success and it’s a lot easier than you think too with these helpful tips and tricks! Below are some things that can help you!

1. Do A Huge Purge: This is a geat way to go through all of the items you’ve accumulated over the years or anything you have duplicates of and donate or get rid of them. Take your time and go room by room with a few various boxes to help you sort. Make separate boxes for donating, for giving away and then some for throwing away. This makes it easier when you begin to organize and sort through your things.

2. Start Collecting Boxes ASAP: Make sure the boxes you are getting are study and different sizes. If you aren’t sure where to look, check your local Facebook neighborhood group or see if any neighbros are getting rid of them. Finding them this way is a lot cheaper then purchasing them through stores. You don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on something you are just going to be needing one time. We have found the cheapest boxes, tape, and all moving supplies are at U-Haul. But, of course getting some free from friends or elsewhere is even better!

3. Use Towels To Pack Breakable Items: A hack a friend shared with me is using the endless of amount of dish towels I have for good use. Packing up breakable items with these dish towels not only can save money on wrapping paper but it also helps keep these items safe during the move. Another hack is pack your spices inside your pots and pans and tape the lids shut. This saves space and keeps them secure, plus if one did open it doesn’t go all over everywhere!

4. Clean As You Go: This is more for your mental health than anything but as you begin to declutter, throw away and get rid of your items you’ll probably be leaving a huge mess. Clean as you go to help you not make a bigger mess than you are. Once you are done with a room, dust the empty shelves, the dressers and wipe down the mirrors.

5. Use Different Color Duct Tape: One way to organize your boxes once you have all your items that you are wanting in each box is to color code them. There are different ways to do it but I find a very simple way is to use duct tape to help you know what box goes where. Use these colors for different areas of your home on where they should be put. Pink can be for the kitchen, green can be for bedrooms and orange could be for the basement.

6. Pack Items You Need In A Small Suitcase: One of the biggest tips and most helpful I’ve found is to pack items that I’ll need right away in my new place. These items can include a few changes of clothes, blanket and pillow, snacks, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, paper towel, trash bags, small laundry detergent, dish soap, sponge, cleaning rags/spray, and toilet bowl cleaner/brush. This way you can have what you need to clean down main areas before unpacking anything.

At the end of it all, I’ll be completely honest, moving is hard. It’s not fun, and it will test you. Give yourself, your spouse, and your kids extra patience and grace. We have moved three times within three years, and this was by far the most challenging, stressful move yet. It stretched us emotionally, mentally, and physically. Any road bump you can think of, we basically had. With that being said, if God is calling you to move, trust He will get you there! We made it and I am still married and my kids are alive 😉 We couldn’t be happier with living in FL.
